Is it safe to use a 2500 psi power washer to clean a mountain bike?

Student asked:

Hi I have a Gt Bike that is 17 years old. It has a few paint chips but the frame is in good shape. I just want to give it a little clean up because sand is stuck between the wheel axle, and frame. Do you think that a power washer would make it look brand new and shiny.Would the power washer chip off all the paint? What is the best way to clean the gears, and metal parts? Should i put them in a bucket of mineral spirit to get rid of all the sand? Thanks

bmx or mountain bike?

rockman asked:

I’m an adult male but i don’t like gears on the mountain bike and i was told that bmx bikes are for kids. I used to have a mountain bike and the chain kept popping off due to my inexperience with gears and i figured the bike was a waste of time.
I’m only using the bike to get groceries etc.

How do you fix gears on a mountain bike?

PECOS BILL asked:

I just bought two used NEXT brand 18 speed mountain bikes. They were sitting at previous owner’s house in a shed behind some hay. They are practically brand new having hardly been riden, but it is clear they have sat for awhile seeing the amount of dust and a bit of rust here and there on screws. Both bikes have the same problem: The grip shifters will not move, therefor the gears will not change. I know nothing about bicycle maintenance, but am half-way handy. So if someone could help me by just explaining in lay man’s terms, that would me most appreciated! Thanks!
After reading some answers, I realized that I didn’t clarify enough. I looked into the cables, they are fine and tension is good. The problem lies in the atual shifters. They are stiff and will not move. I removed the plastic covering and saw nothing to adjust. Any thoughts?

Would it be ok to buy a $300 moungoose tech 4 mountain bike and upgrade the components right away?

just_em asked:

I am thinking about buying a mongoose tech 4 full suspension bike. I have looked at the components and some of them are good. I have read some reviews that say that it is a good frame, but I am just curious about that. I was thinking that I would buy the mongoose and then upgrade the rear derailleur right away. After that I could gradually upgrade the other components. The stock components are as follows:
Type of Shifter:SRAM 4.0
Front and rear V brakes
Fork Type:Rock Shox Judy J1 Fork
Rear Derailleur:Shimano
4 Bar Link 18 in suspension frame
24 speed SRAM 4.0 shifting system for responsive gear changes.
WTB Speed V saddle
26 in wheels with Kenda Kharisma XC tires”

This will be my first mountian bike and I plan on jumping and riding pretty hard. I weigh about 140 lbs. Let me know if you think this would be a good idea and what kind of components I should upgrade. My price range is about $425. Thanks.
