answering this question can get complicated… the simple way is just saying the chain is pushed by the derailer. The derailer cage is the metal thing that is around your chain by your gears. It pushes left to right and moves the chain around to the gears. What makes it go up and down is the tension on the cable from the derailer to the shifter. Its kinda complicated to say but here is a good web site to show you how to adujust and it also explains how it all works
ok. first of all, you have the front or middle gears. the crankshaft is connected to these. the pedals are connected to the crankshaft. then there is the chain. the chain connects the front gears and rear gears(cogs) together. you pedal the front gears which moves the cogs which moves the rear wheel. usually, there are 5-8 cogs depending on the quality of the bike. the bigger the cog, the easier it is to pedal, but the top speed is a lot lower. the shifting in the rear works like this. the derailer moves which moves the chain from one cog to another. it moves it because the chain goes though the derailer. then when the derailer moves, the chain moves too. the front is the same but the derailer pushes the chain instead of actually moving the chain with itself. hope it wasnt too complicated!!
