So I have just bought a mountain bike?

carebear asked:

Now it has been a long time since I have ridden a bike. And the last time I rode a bike it had ten gears. Now my new one has 21 gears. How do I know which ones to use?

It really depends just on what feels good to you. But usually if you are going up a hill, you are going to want to use your easier gears which would be the smaller rings on the front and the bigger rings on the back. If you are just riding where it is mostly flat, then it is up to you. Just find a gear that feels easy to pedal with. If you start getting tired then shift into another gear. Downhill depends on what you are wanting to do. Of course if you want to go fast then you will use smaller rings in the back and bigger rings on the front. ( i’m just trying to make the gears easy to figure out.) But if you don’t really care about going fast then you can either coast or pedal easily with whatever gear you want.
All in all it’s really up to you but I hope this helped some.

Basically, use whatever gear keeps lets you spin the pedals fast while still feeling like you’re getting somewhere. When you’re using the gear numbered 1 or 2 in the back, you should be using 1 on the front. When you’re using the gears number 6 or 7 in the back, you should be using 3 in the front. For everything else, use 2 in the front as a general rule. You can vary this a bit (up to 4 or 5 in the back with 1 in the front, down to 4 in the back with 3 in the front and nearly anything with 2 in the front) depending on what feels comfortable at any given time.

Start in the lowest gear (1-1) and keep working your way up as your speed increases until you’re going as fast as you want. Shift down when you need to going up hills.

Just shift up or down till it feels more easy to pedal while being not to easy…
