The problem starts with what you are buying, these bikes, if you can call them that, are not much more than side walk bikes at best.
The components used are the cheapest low end stuff out there and while for many this is fine these bikes all shift and handle terrible. For a few hundred dollars more you can get a quality entry level bike from a bike shop and not have these problems. Sad to say but the way to prevent this is not to buy bikes from Walmart, K-mart, Target, etc.

You can prevent this in 2 ways. First, you have to buy a bike from a store where they have a repair shop and mechanic who has the knowledge and tools to properly assemble your bike when you buy it, and to make miner adjustments and repairs as necessary in order to honour the warranty. Second, after you buy the bike you need to maintain it, clean it when it gets dirty, dry it off when it gets wet, oil the chain frequently and wipe accumulated dirt off it when it needs it. The tires need to be checked for proper inflation, and brakes need to be kept adjusted. If you do these things, a good bike can last much longer than you might believe, my first good bike lasted me 30 years, and would have lasted longer if I hadn’t crashed it in a race. Good bikes aren’t cheap, but neither are bad bikes, the difference is you only need to pay one time for a good bike you can enjoy riding for years, you pay many times for bad bikes you ride for a short time.

NEVER buy bikes at Wal-Mart/Toys R uS—their bikes are mediocre and have the worst assembly of components. I suggest you shop at more reputable bike shops ONLINE i.e. Cambriabikes.com, WheelWorld.com and JensonUsa.com—they have the BEST and serve their customers whether novice or professional riders.

    Mongoose Mountain Bike…

If you aren’ t quite fit enough to ride your bike to work and live within 18 miles, you can go with this electric bike option from Mongoose. Mike and I saw it the other day at Shopko for less than three hundred dollars, so for just a small investment…
